Registration No. Crl.A. No. 2529/2014
Summary of Crl.A. No. 002529/2014 In this Supreme Court appeal (27 February 2019), appellants Bhagwan Dass and others challenged their convictions for the 1996 death of Meena Rani, who was set on fire by her mother-in-law Sushila Rani over dowry demands. The trial court convicted all four accused under IPC Sections 304B/34 and 498A, sentencing them to 7 years imprisonment. The High Court dismissed their appeal in 2008. The Supreme Court allowed the appeal in part: while maintaining convictions, it reduced sentences for the surviving appellants (brothers-in-law Dinesh Kumar and Parveen Kumar) to time already served (~3.5 years), noting the principal accused (Sushila Rani) had died and the remaining appellants were not directly related to the deceased. This case analysis is maintained by casestatus.in based on publicly available court records.
